STATEMENT

I see the classroom as a space of organized play and experimentation. There are two clear ways of doing research. One is through books, articles, journals, and another through experiences, interviews, writing. Combined with practice, these methods can translate into a wide body of work. This is what my practice looks like as a professional illustrator and educator.

Since graduating from the MFA Illustration Practice Program at Maryland Institute College of Art, I have worked with clients who include The New York Times, NBC News, Politico, HuffPost, Taste Magazine. My year-long thesis project, Garden of Love, explored themes of identity and femininity through the lens of a South Asian woman from India. Over the years, I have built a toolkit incorporating traditional media like watercolor, illustration, 3D illustrative ceramics and animation, around an understanding of storytelling, design, and research.

As an instructor, I am skilled in building lesson plans, moderating challenging discussions with students, and doing demonstrations on digital software use. This is my first-semester teaching graduate students; I believe I am equipped with advanced skills in the field of illustration and have been told that I am a great communicator by students and faculty members. I have been invited to teach illustration and animation workshops with Undergraduate students at MICA and have conducted workshops for the Open Studies Department at MICA as well.

I like to put in the extra effort when given a task. Having created a brand-new website for my students to showcase their animations online, I also selected and hired workshop guest lecturers for my class. Both workshops were extremely successful and have pushed students to work in new ways. My goal as an instructor is to create a safe and encouraging learning environment for students to feel comfortable to explore their voices and grow as artists.
